Theory of Column Subtraction

🎯 What is Column Subtraction?

Column subtraction is a method of writing and solving subtraction problems where numbers are written one under another by digits.

📋 Rules of Column Subtraction:

  1. Write the minuend at the top
  2. Write the subtrahend below it, aligned to the right
  3. Draw a line under the subtrahend
  4. Subtract digit by digit, starting from the right
  5. If the digit of the minuend is less than the digit of the subtrahend, borrow one from the higher digit

🔍 Example of Column Subtraction:

8 4 2
- 3 5 6
─────
4 8 6

Step-by-step solution:

1. 2 - 6 = impossible, borrow 1 from tens: 12 - 6 = 6

2. 3 - 5 = impossible, borrow 1 from hundreds: 13 - 5 = 8

3. 7 - 3 = 4

Answer: 486

⚠️ Important Points:

  • Always check that the minuend is greater than the subtrahend
  • When borrowing, don't forget to decrease the digit in the higher place
  • The result cannot be a negative number
  • We work only with whole numbers
