What are Place Values?
A place value is the position of a digit in a number. Each position has its own name and value.
Basic Place Values
- Ones — first position from the right
- Tens — second position from the right
- Hundreds — third position from the right
- Thousands — fourth position from the right
- Ten Thousands — fifth position from the right
- Hundred Thousands — sixth position from the right
Example
In the number 1234:
- 4 — ones (4 × 1 = 4)
- 3 — tens (3 × 10 = 30)
- 2 — hundreds (2 × 100 = 200)
- 1 — thousands (1 × 1000 = 1000)
Total: 1000 + 200 + 30 + 4 = 1234
